Gilwell 100, A history of success; a future of promise
History of Gilwell Park
Gilwell Park has been welcoming Scouts from around the world for 100 years.
This Scouting wonderland was purchased in 1919 by benefactor, William de Bois Maclaren, who generously offered to buy a camping area for inner city London Scouts who lacked access to suitable grounds.
The old house was in a terrible state of repair and the grounds overgrown, and on Maundy Thursday 1919 Rover Scouts began the clean-up operation. On their first visit the Rovers found the ground too wet to pitch their tents, so they slept in the gardeners’ shed on the Orchard which they named ‘The Pigsty’. It still stands there today.
Gilwell Park has since grown and evolved to meet the needs of the Movement but its core ethos of delivering skills for life through fun and adventure remains the same and benefits the 40,000 young people who visit from across the globe every year.
